Aspen Leaf Miner and Other Common Pests: A UK Troubleshooting Guide

Aspen forgives a great deal. It grows quickly, suckers freely and shrugs off wind and wet that leave other trees looking battered. What it will not do is hide damage. By midsummer a leaf miner can turn a whole crown silver-grey, and gall mites can make leaves look as though they have been through a hailstorm. Most of this is cosmetic. Some of it is not. Here is how to tell the difference, and what is worth doing about it.

Before you diagnose, look at the whole tree

Aspen (Populus tremula) is a native tree of wet woodland, upland scrub and heath edges, and it is built to cope with rough conditions. Its leaves are thin and move in the slightest breeze, which is why the tree has such a distinctive shimmer. That thin foliage is also easy to mark, so a scruffy canopy is not automatically bad news.

Start by asking three questions. Is the damage confined to leaves, or does it reach the trunk and roots? Are the shoot tips still extending, with fresh growth at the top of the crown? Did the problem arrive after midsummer, when the tree has already done most of its growing? Leaf trouble late in the season rarely matters. Bark, roots and stalled growth matter a great deal.

The aspen leaf miner: silver trails and curling edges

The most common complaint about aspen is the wandering, silvery line that appears inside the leaves from early summer onwards. It is the work of a small moth whose larvae live between the upper and lower leaf surfaces, eating the soft tissue as they go. The mine usually runs along the leaf margin, and the edge of a heavily mined leaf puckers and rolls inwards until the whole canopy looks scorched and grey.

Several generations can build up in one season, so the worst damage tends to appear from July. A mature aspen in a hedgerow will live with it happily. A young whip planted two years ago in a garden may not, because the miner is removing the leaf area it needs to establish.

What actually helps

• Clear and bin fallen leaves in autumn rather than composting them, since the moths overwinter in the leaf litter.
• On small trees, pick off badly mined leaves in June and drop them in the bin.
• Keep young trees mulched and watered in dry spells so they can regrow with vigour.
• Skip broad-spectrum sprays. They kill the small parasitic wasps and birds that do the work for you.

Gall mites: blisters, pouches and felt patches

Gall mites are microscopic, so you will never see the culprit, only its handiwork. On aspen and its poplar relatives they produce raised blisters on the upper leaf surface, small pouches that poke out of the underside, or patches of dense, felt-like hairs that start pale and turn brown as the season passes. None of it is pretty, and all of it looks alarming on a young tree.

The reassuring news is that gall mites rarely affect the tree's health. The mites feed on a small patch of tissue, the leaf curls or swells around them, and the tree carries on. Galls are also very difficult to treat, because the mites sit protected inside the distorted tissue where sprays cannot reach them. Prune out the worst affected shoots on a small ornamental tree if it offends you, and otherwise leave it.

Rust, leaf spot and mildew

Rust is the orange one. Look underneath the leaf for powdery yellow-orange pustules, and on top for yellow mottling that spreads into larger blotches. It is a fungus of wet, humid summers and crowded plantings, and in bad years it can cause early leaf fall. Several rust species affect poplars and aspens, some of which need a second host to complete their life cycle — one of them alternates with Scots pine, for example.

Leaf spot shows as dark, sometimes purplish blotches, and powdery mildew as a white floury coating over the surface. Both are worse where air movement is poor. All three are managed in the same way: rake up and bin the fallen leaves, thin dense suckers so air can move through, water the roots rather than the foliage, and accept that a wet August will always produce some marking.

Aphids, beetles, caterpillars and sawflies

Aphids cluster on young shoots and new leaves, leaving sticky honeydew that turns black with sooty mould. Ants farm them, ladybirds, hoverflies and lacewings eat them, and a firm jet of water from a hose knocks them back if they are really in the way. Do not spray for them unless a young tree is genuinely struggling, because the predators arrive a week or two later and do a better job.

Leaf beetles, including the red poplar leaf beetle and its relatives, chew holes and can strip young leaves to a lacework of veins. Caterpillars of the poplar hawk-moth feed on aspen too, but they are handsome, harmless and worth leaving. If you find tightly rolled leaves on aspen in spring, that may be a leaf-rolling weevil — scarce in Britain and a genuinely good record, not a pest to destroy.

Trunk, root and branch problems

Sunken, cracked or oozing patches on the bark usually point to canker, which tends to follow wounding, drought stress or waterlogged roots. Bracket fungi on the trunk, including the aspen specialist that fruits on living trees, are telling you about heartwood decay well before the crown shows it. Aspens are not long-lived trees, and a hollowing veteran is often ecologically valuable rather than dangerous in itself.

What matters is stability. If a tree with trunk decay sits near a road, a driveway or a building, ask a qualified arboriculturist to inspect it rather than guessing from the ground. In a shelterbelt or a wild corner, the sensible response is usually to let it age and to keep an eye on lean, cracking or lifting at the base.

When to act, and when to leave well alone

• Act if a young tree loses most of its leaves before midsummer, two years running.
• Act if the leader or main framework shoots are being stripped.
• Leave late-season mining, galls and mildew on established trees to run their course.
• Never spray a whole tree for cosmetic leaf damage.
• Rake and bin leaves each autumn where rust or miners have been a problem.
• Note the date and take a few photographs. Patterns over two or three seasons tell you far more than one bad week.

A calm routine for the year

Walk round your aspens in June, July and September. In June, check whether new growth is clean and strong. In July, expect leaf miner and rust to show, and decide whether the tree still looks vigorous underneath. In September, clear the ground beneath the worst affected trees and put the leaves in the bin. Feed and mulch young trees, keep strimmers and mowers away from the bark, and only reach for a spray when a young tree's survival is genuinely at risk. Aspen is a generous, resilient tree. Give it reasonable conditions and a bit of attention, and it will outgrow almost everything that chews it.
